Santa's Workshop Toy Machine Breaks
The Forbidden Button
Eveline climbed the creaky attic stairs at Grandpa's house, her mismatched socks peeking from her grass-stained sneakers with each step. December sunlight streamed through the dusty window, making the old ornaments sparkle like treasure. "What's in that box, Grandpa?" she asked, pointing to a wooden crate marked with faded red paint.
Grandpa chuckled, his spectacles sliding down his nose. "Oh, just old holiday decorations, little sprout. Help yourself while I fetch more lights."
Eveline's hazel eyes widened as she lifted the lid. Nestled in tissue paper sat a brass machine no bigger than a shoebox, covered in tiny gears and springs. A bright red button gleamed on top. Beside it lay a yellowed note in spidery handwriting: 'Do NOT touch—Property of Workshop #1, North Pole.'
Her fingers hovered over the button. "How does it work?" she whispered. Before she could stop herself, curiosity won. Click! The machine whirred to life, gears spinning wildly. Golden sparks shot out, swirling around the attic. Then—CRACK!—smoke poured from the machine's side. The gears ground to a halt with a terrible screech.
Eveline heard sleigh bells jingling from inside the broken machine, and a tiny voice cried, "Oh no! Not again!"
