Chapter 1: The Parade Announcement

Chapter 1: The Parade Announcement

Labo's tail thumped against the kitchen floor as the family gathered around the breakfast table. The silver bell on his bright blue collar jingled softly with each wag. Sunlight streamed through the windows, catching the glossy golden-yellow of his coat.

"The Christmas parade is this Saturday!" Marcus's older sister Emma announced, waving a colorful flyer. "There'll be ten floats this year, plus the marching band!"

Labo noticed Marcus immediately shrink into his chair, clutching his worn stuffed rabbit tighter. The boy's knuckles went white.

"Marcus, you'll love it," their mother said gently. "The whole town will be there."

"I... I don't want to go," Marcus whispered, his voice barely audible.

Labo padded over and rested his broad head on Marcus's knee. The boy's hand trembled as it touched Labo's soft fur.

"Sweetie, we go every year. It's tradition," his father added. "You can't miss it."

Marcus's breathing quickened. Labo's warm brown eyes studied the boy's face, recognizing fear he'd seen before in a puppy from his own litter—the runt who'd been afraid of everything until Labo had stayed beside him, patient and steady.

"Too loud," Marcus managed. "Too many people. I can't."

That afternoon, Labo found Marcus hiding in his bedroom closet, tears streaming down his face. Through the window, they could already hear workers in the town square hammering together parade stands.

The sounds made Marcus cover his ears and curl into a tighter ball.
