Chapter 1: The Costume Contest Announcement

Hunny's bright yellow fur gleamed in the autumn sunlight as she trotted through the village square, her nose twitching at the scent of cinnamon and pumpkin spice. Orange and red leaves swirled around her paws, and jack-o'-lanterns grinned from every doorstep. The village had transformed overnight into a Halloween wonderland.

"Did you hear? Did you hear?" Mrs. Chen called from the community center steps, waving a colorful poster. "The annual Halloween Costume Design Contest is this Saturday!"

Villagers gathered around, chattering excitedly. Hunny's tail wagged as she watched children bounce with enthusiasm—all except one. Marcus stood at the edge of the crowd, pushing his round glasses up his nose, his shoulders hunched.

Hunny padded over to him, nudging his hand gently with her delicate nose. Marcus knelt down, scratching behind her ears. "I wish I could enter, Hunny," he whispered. "But standing on that stage in front of everyone? My stomach gets all twisted just thinking about it."

Hunny's black eyes studied his worried face. She remembered her own first days in the village—how scary it felt to be seen, to be noticed. Her family's kindness had changed everything for her.

"Marcus! You should enter!" called Sarah, another child. "You draw the coolest monsters!"

Marcus shook his head quickly, backing away. "I-I can't. I'm not good at that stuff."

As he hurried off, three more children approached Hunny, each wearing the same nervous expression. "We're too scared to enter too," admitted little Kai, twisting his hands together.

Hunny's ears perked up. This wasn't just Marcus's problem—half the village children were missing out on the fun because of fear.
