The Morning Surprise

Spark's fingers danced across his ukulele strings, filling the rainforest morning with a cheerful tune. His mismatched shoes—the neon pink sneaker and purple boot—tapped different rhythms against the wooden deck of his family's treehouse. The jingle bell around his neck chimed softly with each movement.

"Tomorrow's Mother's Day!" his little sister Shimmer called from the doorway. "What are you giving Mama?"

Spark's strumming stopped mid-chord. Mother's Day. Tomorrow. His stomach flipped. He'd been so busy practicing his new song, he'd completely forgotten! He reached for his savings jar—the painted coconut shell where he kept his allowance. Empty. He'd spent it all on new ukulele strings last week.

"Spark? You DID remember, right?" Shimmer's eyes grew wide.

Their father appeared behind Shimmer, holding a kitchen timer. "The market closes in one hour, son. After that, shops are shut until after the holiday." He glanced at the recycling bin near the deck, overflowing with cardboard tubes, bottle caps, and colorful scraps. "Though I suppose a creative sloth like you doesn't need a store."

One hour. Zero dollars. Just him and a pile of trash. Spark's heart hammered as the timer started ticking.
