Eveline skipped through the sunlit meadow, her mismatched socks flashing with each step. She'd spent the morning collecting smooth pebbles by the stream, and her overall pockets bulged with treasures.

"Mail for Miss Eveline!" called the postal carrier at the garden gate.

"Grandmother, what's a checkup?" Eveline asked, her voice suddenly smaller.
