Chapter 1: The Mountain of Memories

Chapter 1: The Mountain of Memories

Tronic knocked gently on the blue door of 47 Maple Street, his constellation freckles glowing softly in the afternoon light. Mrs. Morrison answered with a worried smile.

"Thank you for coming, Tronic. Jasper's been so anxious lately."

Tronic adjusted his stethoscope and followed her upstairs. When she opened Jasper's bedroom door, Tronic paused. He'd seen many things in his years at the clinic, but this was different. Clothes, toys, books, and papers covered every surface. The bed was barely visible under layers of stuffed animals and art projects. A narrow path wound through the chaos like a hiking trail.

Jasper sat cross-legged in the corner, his curly red hair sticking up at odd angles. His oversized dinosaur t-shirt had paint stains near the collar.

"Hi, Jasper," Tronic said softly, stepping carefully into the room. "I'm here for your check-up."

Jasper looked up, his eyes red-rimmed. "I know why you're really here. Mom told the clinic I won't clean my room. But I can't! What if I throw away something important?"

Tronic knelt beside him, his articulated fingers resting gently on his knees. "Tell me about that."

"This drawing—" Jasper grabbed a crumpled paper, "—I made it the day Grandpa visited. And this rock is from the beach. And this broken toy was from my sixth birthday. If I throw them away, I'll forget everything!"

Tronic's warm blue eyes dimmed slightly as he scanned the room. Then his foot bumped something, and an entire tower of shoeboxes collapsed, burying them both in a cascade of memories.
