Chapter 1: The Rumble Above

Chapter 1: The Rumble Above

Gizmo's paws pounded through the fresh snow as he raced toward the village square. Above, the mountain groaned—a deep, terrible sound that shook the ice crystals from pine branches.

"Everyone needs to know!" His bark echoed off frozen walls. Villagers poked their heads from doorways—arctic foxes, snow hares, a family of ermines.

"The avalanche!" Gizmo spun in circles, his blue bandana whipping around his neck. "We have to warn the valley towns NOW!"

Old Frost, the polar bear elder, lumbered forward. "Calm yourself, young pup. We must think carefully—"

"There's no time for thinking!" Gizmo's teeth bared. His sky-blue eyes blazed. "While you talk, they could all die!"

He bolted toward the warning bell tower, his claws scraping ice. The rope dangled just out of reach. Gizmo leaped, missed, crashed into the wooden post. He jumped again, growling through clenched jaws.

"Let me help—" Frost began.

"I don't NEED help!" Gizmo snarled. He threw his whole body at the tower. The structure wobbled. Ancient wood cracked.

The bell clanged once—then the tower tilted sideways. Villagers screamed and scattered. The whole structure crashed down, the bell half-buried in snow, its sound silenced forever.

Gizmo's chest heaved. The mountain rumbled again, louder this time. Now they had no warning system at all.
