The Golden Gears

Zara kneels in the courtyard dust, pulling a magnifying glass from her worn leather satchel to inspect a peculiar silver beetle. "Fascinating," she whispers. Beside her, Leo shifts his weight from one foot to the other. "Gosh, Zara, can we just go inside? It looks awfully dark in there," he mumbles, tugging at his collar. Zara stands, brushing off her navy cargo pants. "Don't worry, Leo! My parents always say the best mysteries are hidden in the shadows. We just have to look closely." She pats her satchel, filled with adventure badges and notebooks, and marches forward. Zara steps into the grand hall just as the heavy golden doors begin clicking and shifting their positions. CLACK. WHIRRR. The massive doors slide along brass tracks, scrambling into a circle around them. Above each of the four doors, a giant clock face glows with bright blue numbers. The exit behind them vanishes behind a moving wall of gears. Leo gasps, covering his eyes. Zara’s deep brown eyes widen, not with fear, but with a sudden, electric thrill. The floor begins to vibrate, and the giant hands on the clock faces start spinning wildly before snapping to a halt.
