The Forgotten Archway

Lily pushed aside the dry, brittle fronds of the botanical garden's forgotten Australian exhibit. Her dark bob haircut brushed against her chin as she leaned closer to a strange, glowing archway hidden behind the eucalyptus trees. She had always loved finding the hidden corners of her neighborhood, a trait she inherited from her resourceful parents. Adjusting the vibrant red bandanna around her neck—a gift from her grandmother meant to inspire courage—she stepped through the archway. The air instantly shifted from humid city smog to bone-dry heat. Red dirt stretched in every direction, dotted with spiky spinifex grass. She wasn't in the city anymore. "Watch your step, mate! You're trampling my breakfast," a raspy voice snapped. Lily's warm brown eyes widened. Sitting on a rock was a wallaby, wearing a tiny leather vest and a scowl. "I'm Barnaby," the wallaby grumbled, tossing a piece of curled bark at her feet. "You've wandered into the Adjective Maze. Only way out is to describe your way out. Read the bark." Lily scooped up the bark. Her hands animated wildly as she read aloud, "To find the path where you belong, your descriptive words must be strong." Barnaby crossed his short arms. "Generic words won't cut it here. You need precise adjectives to unlock the scrub. Get moving." The glowing archway behind Lily vanished with a soft pop, leaving her completely surrounded by an endless maze of towering, dusty bushes.
