Chapter 1: The Thumping Mystery

Chapter 1: The Thumping Mystery

Eveline knelt beside her bunny's hutch in the garden, her hazel eyes wide with concern. Snowdrop, her fluffy white bunny, was thumping his back feet against the wooden floor—THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!

"What's wrong, Snowdrop?" Eveline whispered, reaching into one of her overall pockets for a carrot slice. But Snowdrop ignored it and thumped again, harder this time.

Eveline's chestnut hair bounced as she spun around to look across the sunlit meadow. Was something scary out there? She saw nothing but wildflowers swaying in the breeze.

"Why would Snowdrop thump like that?" she asked the figurine, as she often did when puzzled. In her imagination, Sage's voice was calm and patient: "What makes noise without words, young one?"

Eveline tilted her head. "A drum? A... a warning?"

Suddenly, through her window, she saw Snowdrop doing something even stranger—running in wild circles around his hutch, then freezing completely still. Her stomach twisted with worry. Was her bunny sick?
