Eric and the Secret Star Map
The Shifting Stars

Eric adjusted the straps of his backpack, keeping a steady, unwavering gaze on Todd. The older boy was blocking the sidewalk, looming over Eric's younger sister, Mia. Eric stepped between them, his posture upright and confident despite the size difference. "Nice afternoon for a blockade, Todd, but we have a lot of homework to get to," Eric said, his dry humor cutting the tension. Todd scoffed, rolling his eyes, but stepped aside. Eric didn't look back for a reaction or seek any praise from his sister; he just made sure Mia was safely walking ahead. As they cut through the neighborhood park, a strange glint of light caught Eric's eye near the roots of the old oak tree. He knelt down, his faded blue hoodie brushing the damp grass, and pulled a glass-like cylinder from the dirt. Inside was a rolled parchment. When he slid it out, the surface illuminated instantly. It was a constellation map, but the stars were shifting and moving. A sequence of blue dots blinked in the center: three blinks, then six, then nine. A glowing, ethereal path suddenly projected from the map, stretching far into the dense woods at the edge of the park. Mia ran ahead toward their house, completely oblivious to the light. Eric stood frozen. The map pulsed warmly in his hands, the light reflecting in his warm brown eyes. The path demanded to be followed, but the woods looked darker and more intimidating than ever. The normal quiet of his suburban street faded away entirely, replaced by a low, electric hum from the glowing parchment. He was entirely alone with a map that seemed to be waiting for an answer, and his ordinary afternoon was officially over.
