The Melting Friends

Star adjusted her yellow hard hat, making sure the bright star sticker was perfectly straight. She was practicing her rock-stacking, just like she used to do as a tiny troll in the deep caves of Troll Valley. Her soft sage green fingers carefully placed a flat slate on top of a granite pebble. "Perfect balance!" she cheered, her voluminous rainbow hair bouncing with every jump. Beside her stood two new friends she had built that morning: Barnaby and Pip, a pair of snowmen. "B-b-brilliant building, S-s-star," Barnaby chattered, his carrot nose wiggling. "But I feel a bit squishy." Pip, the smaller snowman, patted his own belly. "My buttons are sliding! The big yellow sky-heater is turning us into puddles!" Star looked up. The winter clouds had parted, and the bright sun was shining directly on them. The heat from the sun was turning the solid snow into liquid water. "Oh no! The sun's thermal energy is melting you!" Star gasped. She reached into the deep pockets of her blue overalls, pulling out her toy-sized hammer and a ruler. "Don't worry, friends! I will build you a giant ice-cube umbrella house to keep you cold!"
