The Crumbling Wall

The village square was a battlefield of flying mud and bruised shins. Hunny sat on the sidelines, her soft, sunshine yellow fur a stark contrast to the grime covering the neighborhood children. Her boy, Leo, was currently at the bottom of a dogpile. They called this game 'football,' but to Hunny, it looked like a wrestling match. Kids were picking up the leather ball, running with it, and kicking each other's legs. A stray kick sent the heavy ball crashing into the crumbling stone wall of the old village library. Dust plumed into the air. Hunny's round, black eyes locked onto a dark gap where a loose stone had fallen away. Before her adoption, when she survived entirely on her wits in damp alleyways, she had learned that small, hidden crevices often held treasures—or at least a safe place to sleep. Moving with a quick, agile stance on all fours, the slender dog trotted over to the wall. She squeezed her delicate nose into the dark hole. Her keen intuition told her something important was inside. Pawing frantically at the ancient mortar, she clamped her pink lips around a thick, leather-bound object and tugged. It was a dusty, decaying book. She dropped it at Leo's feet just as he limped over. The cover fell open, revealing faded ink diagrams of players kicking a ball—without using their hands. Leo gasped, reading the title aloud: 'The Rules of the London Football Association, 1863.' The chaotic shouting in the square instantly ceased as every child crowded around the slender yellow dog and her mysterious discovery.
