We are traveling back thousands of years! Imagine living in a world without science, or schools, or even smartphones. No weather apps to tell you why the sky is suddenly flashing with lightning and going boom with loud thunder!

Oh, wow! That sounds a little bit scary. If I heard a huge boom and didn't know what it was, I would probably hide under a giant leaf!

Exactly! It was very mysterious. Because ancient people couldn't explain things like thunder, lightning, or where the sun goes at night, they created stories. They believed powerful spirits or gods were in charge of the weather, the sun, and the stars.

Ah! So if the thunder went boom, they might think a thunder god was playing the drums up in the clouds to get their attention?

That is a perfect way to put it! It made the big, mysterious world feel a little bit safer and easier to understand.

But wait, how did they share these drum-playing cloud stories? They didn't have iPads, or books, or even paper yet!

They used the oldest and most magical tool ever: their voices! Before written language existed, people sat around campfires and told stories about gods and spirits to pass down their beliefs to their children and grandchildren.

Ooh, campfire stories are the absolute best! Did they leave any clues behind for us to find today, like a secret map?

Yes, they did! History detectives, called archaeologists, have found amazing drawings on cave walls and tiny statues of gods and goddesses. Some of these are thousands of years old, hidden deep inside dark caves!

No way! Painted on cave walls? That is like a super ancient, secret art gallery!

So when did people finally start writing these stories down instead of just painting on caves?

Some of the very first written records about religion come from ancient Egypt, more than four thousand years ago! They wrote about their gods on massive temple walls and on special scrolls called papyrus.

Wait, pap-y-rus? That sounds like a funny word. Is it a type of dinosaur?

Haha, no, not a dinosaur! Papyrus is a special kind of ancient paper made from tall plants that grew near the river. They would roll it up into long scrolls to keep their stories safe.

Did everyone across the whole world believe in the exact same gods back then?

No, they didn't! Different groups of people in different parts of the world invented their own religions. And because there were no airplanes or internet, they did this without ever knowing about each other's beliefs!

Wow! So people in one land were making up stories about the sun, while people far away were doing the exact same thing, but with totally different names?

Yes, exactly! And many of these ancient religions believed in multiple gods. There would be a god for the rain, a god for growing yummy crops, and even a god for war.

That sounds like a superhero team! Where each god has their own special superpower to help the world.

That is a wonderful way to think about it! A super-team of gods.

What happened to all those ancient religions? Are they still around today, or did they disappear like the dinosaurs?

Well, some did disappear. You might know about the ancient Greek gods like Zeus, or Norse gods like Thor with his mighty hammer! Today, we study them as history. But other religions changed and grew.

Wait, Thor is from an ancient religion? That is so cool! What is the oldest religion that people still practice today?

That would be Hinduism! It is the oldest major religion still widely practiced today. Its roots go back at least four thousand years to ancient India.

Four thousand years?! Oh my goodness, that is older than my house, older than my school, and definitely older than my grandma!

Haha, yes, way older! And get this: today, about eight billion people in the world follow one of the major religions that started thousands of years ago.

Eight billion? That is a lot of people! It is amazing how stories from so long ago are still so important to people all over the world today.
