How London Foxes Live in Cities
Stefany's Wild Adventures: London's Clever Foxes
Hello, my wonderful little explorers! Welcome back to another wild adventure podcast. I am Stefany, and today, we are traveling all the way to the big, bustling city of London to meet some very clever, furry neighbors. Can you guess who they are? That is right, it is the beautiful red foxes!
These fluffy red friends are not new to the city. In fact, they have been living right alongside people in London for over seventy years! Today, there are thousands of these friendly creatures trotting down the sidewalks and exploring the parks.
You might imagine a wild fox is as big as a wolf, but London foxes are actually quite small. They only weigh about four to nine kilograms. To help you picture that, it is about the same size as a cuddly house cat or a small pet dog! Very lightweight and cute.
They also have a secret weapon: their gorgeous, fluffy tails! Did you know a fox's tail is called a 'brush'? It is not just for show; it acts like a bicycle's steering wheel, helping the fox balance when running and making super quick, sharp turns!
A group of foxes living together is called a pack, which is just like a big, loving family. A normal fox pack has between two and eight foxes living together in their cozy home.
And the absolute cutest part? Baby foxes are called 'kits'. These sweet little kits stay close to their mother for about five months, learning all her secrets, before they go off to find their very own territory.
Now, you might not see them often because London foxes are 'nocturnal'. That is a fancy word which simply means they love to sleep during the warm day and stay wide awake at night, hunting for food when the streets are quiet and empty.
To get around in the dark, they have amazing superpowers. For one, they are incredibly speedy! If they are chasing a toy or escaping from danger, they can run up to forty-eight kilometers per hour. That is faster than a car driving through a school zone!
They also have super-powered ears. A fox can hear a tiny little mouse squeaking from a hundred meters away, even if that mouse is hiding deep underneath a blanket of cold snow! Isn't that spectacular?
Living in a giant city means finding creative snacks. London foxes eat almost anything they can find, like mice, birds, yummy berries, and bugs. But their favorite trick is opening up rubbish bins in gardens to find yummy leftovers!
They are like little furry detectives, using their clever paws to slide off trash lids. Because there is so much food in the city, they are very happy, well-fed neighbors.
So, next time you are tucked into bed, think of the clever little London foxes starting their nighttime adventure. Thank you so much for listening today! Keep exploring, stay curious, and I will see you next time. Bye-bye!
