Chapter 1: Shadows in the Starlight

Chapter 1: Shadows in the Starlight

The autumn evening wrapped Willowbrook Park in a blanket of silver moonlight. Labro trotted beside his owner along the familiar path, his brass tag jingling softly with each step. His golden-yellow coat caught the lamplight, turning him into a moving sunbeam against the darkness. He paused to investigate a particularly interesting scent near the oak tree—his tail held high in its characteristic happy curve—when something else caught his attention.

A small figure sat hunched on the bench overlooking the pond, shoulders trembling.

Labro's warm brown eyes focused on the girl. Without hesitation, he pulled gently on his leash, leading his owner toward the bench. His experience with children from his first home awakened something deep within him—a recognition of distress that needed comfort.

The girl looked up, revealing tired eyes rimmed with red. Long dark hair fell across her oversized cardigan as she quickly wiped her cheeks.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the evening breeze. "I didn't mean to bother anyone."

Labro sat directly in front of her, his broad muzzle tilted slightly, his floppy ears framing his gentle expression. He waited, patient and still, his presence a quiet invitation.

"This is Labro," his owner said softly. "He seems to think you need a friend."

The girl's hand reached out tentatively, then pulled back. "I'm Luna. I just... I can't stop thinking about tomorrow. The new school. Everyone will stare at me."

As if sensing the depth of her fear, Labro pressed his nose gently against her knee. But Luna's next words came out choked with tears: "What if nobody wants to be my friend? What if I'm alone forever?"
