Labro's brass tag jingled as he trotted beside his owner through Willowbrook Community Park's main entrance. The morning sun illuminated his golden-yellow coat, making it gleam like polished honey. His tail curved high in its characteristic happy arc—this was his favorite time of day.

Ahead, a cluster of neighbors gathered near the picnic pavilion, their voices sharp with frustration. Labro's ears perked forward, detecting tension in their tones. His owner approached the group, and Labro followed, his brown eyes scanning each face with concern.

"Third night in a row!" Mrs. Chen gestured toward the community snack box, its lid hanging open. "We leave treats for the afternoon volunteers, and every morning they're gone. Every single one!"

Mr. Rodriguez crossed his arms. "Someone's stealing from the park. We should call the police."

Labro padded closer to the wooden box, his broad muzzle investigating the area. His nose twitched, processing dozens of scents: peanut butter, chocolate chips, human hands, and something else—something wild and desperate. The smell triggered his curiosity, that eager forward-leaning posture taking over as he circled the pavilion.

"Look, even Labro's investigating," someone chuckled, but the laughter held no warmth.

As the humans debated installing cameras and locks, Labro discovered muddy paw prints beneath the picnic table—small, delicate prints with four toes. Not dog prints. Not cat prints either. His tail stopped wagging.
