Chapter 1: The Phantom Frequency

Chapter 1: The Phantom Frequency

Casa's webbed fingers danced across the navigation console of The Lily Pad Explorer, his golden-amber eyes scanning the star charts with practiced efficiency. Beside him, Pip—a young Vulpian with rust-colored fur and oversized ears—fidgeted with her scanner headset.

"Captain, those energy pulses are getting stronger," Pip announced, her triangular ears twitching nervously. "They're coming from Verdania—that uncharted jungle planet we passed yesterday."

Casa leaned forward, his emerald skin catching the blue glow of the control panels. The mysterious signals pulsed in rhythmic patterns across the screen—too organized to be natural phenomena, too complex to be random interference. His mind raced back to his academy training, where instructors had warned about investigating unknown transmissions. But hadn't he also learned that discovery required taking calculated risks?

"What's your assessment, Navigator?" Casa asked, his voice carrying that characteristic ribbit-inflection that always seemed to calm his crew.

Pip's tail swished anxiously. "The signal pattern resembles a distress beacon, but... it's ancient. Like, thousands-of-years ancient. And it's broadcasting on frequencies we've never encountered."

Casa adjusted his crimson captain's coat, fingers brushing against his commendation medals. He'd earned those by trusting his instincts, even when the safe choice seemed more sensible. The signals could be anything—a crashed vessel, an automated warning system, or something entirely unprecedented.

"Set course for Verdania," Casa decided. "Prepare for atmospheric entry."

As The Lily Pad Explorer descended through Verdania's thick cloud cover, the ship suddenly lurched violently. Warning klaxons blared. Casa's powerful hind legs braced against the floor as he fought to stabilize their trajectory.

"Captain! The energy signals—they're interfering with our propulsion systems!" Pip shouted over the alarms. "We're going down!"

The viewscreen filled with a rushing blur of bioluminescent jungle canopy. Casa's hands moved with desperate precision across the controls, but the ship was falling too fast. They were going to crash.
