Shadows Across the Mountain River Valley

Nikolai adjusted his leather messenger bag and squinted through the morning mist rolling across the mountain trail. His grandmother had sent him to check the old ranger station for supplies, but something felt wrong. The silence was too complete—even the birds seemed to be holding their breath.

"Hello?" Nikolai called softly, his voice swallowed by the dense fog. No response.

As he rounded the familiar bend near Eagle's Ridge, Nikolai spotted something that made his stomach drop. Three backpacks sat abandoned on the rocky outcrop, their contents scattered as if dropped in haste. A water bottle rolled gently in the wind, and a torn map fluttered against a pine branch.

Nikolai approached cautiously, his hiking boots crunching on loose gravel. The backpacks belonged to the college students who'd passed through his village yesterday—he remembered their excited chatter about exploring the "haunted" caves deeper in the mountains. His grandmother had warned them about the unstable weather, but they'd laughed it off.

"This isn't good," Nikolai muttered, picking up the torn map. Red circles marked several cave entrances, including some his grandmother had specifically told him to avoid. The temperature was dropping fast, and those storm clouds gathering overhead looked serious.

Nikolai pulled out his old flip phone, but the screen showed no signal. The nearest ranger station was hours away, and by the time he could get help, the approaching storm would make any rescue attempt impossible. He looked at the cave markings again, then at the darkening sky.

The smart thing would be to head home and wait for the storm to pass. But three people were missing, possibly trapped underground with night falling and temperatures plummeting. Nikolai touched the friendship bracelet on his wrist—a reminder of his promise to always help others when he could.

He shouldered his bag and started toward the marked caves, hoping his grandmother's survival lessons would be enough.
