The Crumbling Amphitheater

The Crumbling Amphitheater

Pal trotted ahead, his white-tipped tail curving upward like a bright flag amidst the crumbling marble columns of the ancient amphitheater. The Mediterranean sun warmed his tri-colored coat, baking the mahogany-brown patches along his spine. Beside him scurried Gizmo, chattering nervously about the mythological ruins. "Statistically, Pal, ancient caves possess a seventy-four percent chance of structural instability," Gizmo muttered, adjusting his spectacles. Pal paused, his velvet-soft ears swiveling. He offered a gentle, huffing laugh, bumping his small black nose affectionately against Gizmo's knee to quell the anxiety. He communicated his steadfast reassurance through a gentle nudge, always the reliable anchor to Gizmo's frantic energy. They descended into the shadowy maw of the cavern, the air growing frigid. Pal's large, dark brown eyes adjusted instantly to the gloom. He remembered the comfort of his warm den back home, a stark contrast to this jagged abyss, but where Gizmo went, Pal followed. Suddenly, the earth violently convulsed. A deafening crack splintered the silence. Pal scrambled backward, claws scrabbling on slick limestone, but Gizmo was a second too slow. Dust billowed in suffocating clouds as the ceiling collapsed. Pal coughed, shaking his head. As the debris settled, Pal spots a massive rock blocking the path and hears a loud rumbling sound deep inside the cave.
