The Cry from the Ice

The Cry from the Ice

Lusky's ice-blue eyes scanned the frozen horizon as wind whipped through his thick gray-and-white fur. He'd ventured far from his mountain home, drawn by stories of the vast Antarctic coast where icebergs towered like crystalline fortresses. His silver tag jingled rhythmically as he bounded across packed snow, his plumed tail held high with the thrill of exploration.

A desperate sound pierced the howling wind—a high-pitched cry that made Lusky's pointed ears swivel instantly. Without hesitation, he pivoted and raced toward the noise, his athletic build carrying him swiftly across the treacherous terrain. Between two massive ice formations, he discovered a small penguin chick huddled against the frozen ground, trembling violently.

"Hey there, little one," Lusky said gently, lowering himself to appear less intimidating. The penguin's dark eyes were wide with terror.

"I'm Pip," the chick stammered through chattering clicks. "The storm... it separated me from my colony. I don't know where they went!"

Lusky's intuition told him this wasn't just fear—it was profound loss. He pressed his warm body against Pip, sharing heat. "We'll find them together. I promise."

That's when Lusky noticed the Compass Stone hanging from a cord around Pip's neck—a smooth, iridescent rock that supposedly pointed toward one's true home. But as he examined it, his heart sank. A jagged crack ran through its center, and instead of glowing with directional light, it flickered weakly, giving contradictory signals.

A deep rumble echoed across the ice. Lusky looked up to see a massive crevasse opening between them and the direction Pip's colony had traveled, splitting the landscape with terrifying speed.
