Chapter 1: The Crash in the Grove

Chapter 1: The Crash in the Grove

Labro bounded through Willowbrook Park as dusk painted the sky purple, his brass tag jingling with each enthusiastic stride. His owner, Ms. Chen, had let him off-leash in their usual spot, and he'd immediately launched into his favorite game—chasing the tennis ball she'd tossed toward the wooded grove.

But something was wrong.

As Labro's paws thundered across the grass, a brilliant flash erupted from the oak trees ahead, followed by a metallic CRASH that sent birds scattering into the darkening sky. His golden coat rippled as he skidded to a halt, brown eyes fixed on the clearing where smoke now curled upward in thin wisps.

Labro's tail, usually held high in its happy curve, lowered slightly. His experience with the children from his first home had taught him caution around unexpected situations, but his curiosity pulled him forward. He approached the grove with measured steps, nose working overtime to process the strange scents—burnt plastic, ozone, something altogether unfamiliar.

There, in a small crater surrounded by scattered leaves and broken branches, sat a cube-shaped object no larger than a shoebox. Silver panels reflected the fading light, and two circular lights—blue and dim—blinked irregularly on what Labro assumed was its face.

"BEEP-beep-beep," it chirped, the sound desperate and afraid.

Labro took one step closer, his broad muzzle extended in friendly greeting.

The blue lights flared bright red. The cube suddenly sprouted four spindly legs and scrambled backward, emitting a high-pitched whine that made Labro's floppy ears twitch. A mechanical voice, garbled and staticky, burst from the creature: "DANGER-DANGER-ORGANIC-THREAT-STAY-BACK!"

Before Labro could react, the robot's bent antenna sparked, and an invisible force pushed against his chest like a firm hand, sending him tumbling backward onto his haunches.
