Escaping The Island Of Singing Sirens
The Becalmed Sea
The Aegean sun baked the deck of the Wanderer. Pal rested his chin on his paws, his long velvet-soft ears draped over the sun-warmed planks. Beside him, Gizmo, a scrappy terrier with an oversized pair of brass goggles, frantically adjusted a complex array of nautical charts. 'According to the astrolabe, Pal, the wind vectors are optimal! We should bypass the Cyclades entirely!' Gizmo yipped, his tail a blurry metronome. Pal offered a gentle, reassuring woof, his small black nose twitching at the scent of salt spray. He nudged a stray compass back toward his friend, his innate patience grounding Gizmo's chaotic energy. It was a perfect afternoon. Then, the wind died. An unnatural stillness suffocated the air, broken only by a melody. It was a hauntingly beautiful song, weaving through the fog that suddenly materialized over the water. A beautiful song drifts across the ocean as your small wooden boat drifts toward dangerous jagged rocks. Pal's dark brown eyes widened. The melody pulsed with a hypnotic rhythm. Gizmo's frantic charting ceased. His goggles slipped down his snout. 'So... beautiful,' Gizmo murmured, his voice devoid of its usual sharp cadence. He dropped the tiller. The wooden boat lurched, caught in a violent, unseen current pulling them directly toward a towering silhouette of razor-sharp obsidian spires. Pal barked, a sharp, urgent sound, his red collar jingling. But Gizmo didn't blink, stepping mindlessly toward the bow. The hull groaned as a hidden reef scraped beneath them, violently throwing Pal against the mast.
