Chapter 1: Shadows in the Heartwood

Chapter 1: Shadows in the Heartwood

Earth Godes knelt beside a withering fern, her luminous green eyes narrowing with concern. The Tangled Heartwood had always been dense and shadowed, but now something felt fundamentally wrong. She pressed her palm against the soil, and tendrils of greenery spiraled from her fingertips, attempting to coax life back into the dying plant. Nothing.

"It's spreading faster, Earth!" Pip darted overhead, his iridescent feathers flickering anxiously between emerald and sapphire. "Three more clearings went gray since sunrise!"

Earth Godes stood slowly, her flowing green dress shifting like silk around her legs. She'd been raised by this forest, nurtured by its ancient wisdom. The trees had taught her patience, the springs had shown her the flow of life's energy. But this sickness defied everything she understood.

She closed her eyes, reaching out with her consciousness the way the woodland spirits had taught her long ago. There—deep in the heart of the jungle, where the trees grew so close together that even sound seemed trapped—she felt it. A presence, powerful and chaotic, radiating confusion like heat from a fever.

"The forest spirit," she whispered. "It's... lost."

"Lost?" Pip landed on her flower crown, his tiny heart racing. "Spirits don't get lost! They're ancient, wise—"

A tremor shook the ground. Earth Godes gripped her vine-wrapped staff as the trees around them began to twist, their bark turning ashen. The sickness was accelerating, and at its center, something was screaming without sound.

Then she heard it: a roar of anguish that sent birds fleeing in every direction. The forest spirit wasn't just lost—it was in agony.
