Ladybug Superpowers and Defense
Ladybug Superpowers!
Hi everyone! Welcome to Nature Buddies! I'm Chloe, and today we are talking about a tiny garden superhero. Joining us is bug expert Stefany!
Hi Chloe! I'm so happy to be here. Today we are exploring the secret superpowers of... ladybugs!
Ladybugs? But they look so cute and gentle! Do they really have superpowers?
They absolutely do! First, they are like tiny vacuums for bad bugs. One single ladybug can eat up to five thousand tiny pests called aphids in its lifetime!
Five thousand?! That is a giant mountain of snacks! No wonder farmers love them so much.
Oh, they really do. In fact, farmers have been using ladybugs to protect their crops from hungry pests for over two thousand years!
Wow, that is a long time! But what happens if a big hungry bird tries to eat the ladybug? How do they protect themselves?
This is my favorite part! When they get scared, they release a stinky yellow liquid right out of their legs to gross out predators!
Eww! Smelly legs! That is so funny and yucky at the same time!
It gets better. If the stinky juice doesn't work, they play the ultimate game of freeze-dance. They stay completely still and pretend to be dead for several hours!
They are masters of disguise! And what about their bright red color? Is that just to look pretty in the garden?
Nope! That bright red color is actually a warning sign. It tells predators, 'Hey, I taste terrible and I am poisonous!'
Oh, like a little stop sign! And can you tell how old they are by counting their spots?
Actually, no! A ladybug's spots never change or fade. Some species have up to fifteen spots, while others have none at all!
Wait, no spots at all? That would look so different!
Yes! And when a baby ladybug is first born, it is actually solid black with no spots yet. The spots appear later as it grows up.
That is so cool. Can these little bugs travel very far on their own?
Yes, they are great flyers! They can fly up to sixty miles away from where they were born to find a new home.
Wow, sixty miles is a huge road trip! But what do they do when the freezing cold winter comes?
They go into a super deep sleep called hibernation. That is how they stay safe and warm until spring!
They really are tiny superheroes! Thank you so much for sharing these awesome facts with us today, Stefany!
You are so welcome, Chloe! Keep your eyes peeled for our little red friends next time you are outside!
We definitely will! Goodbye, little nature explorers, see you next time!
